Why would I want to know about NLP?
There are various reasons why you might want to know about NLP. Perhaps you know that you could perform your current job better, if you would know how to better deal with people. Those people could be clients, employees, students, your boss, your bank manager, etc. You know that when you are good at dealing with people, your results will improve. The results could be better pass rates for your students, or improvement on the bottom line of your business or easier interaction with your clients. Anything to make life simpler should be worth a try.
What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It covers a vast area. But I will give an example most people can relate to. We all have learned patterns of thought and behaviour, responses to everyday situations, which we make unconsciously, without really thinking about them. Consider how you drive a car. When you see a red traffic light, what do you do? You stop. But, how do you stop and what steps do you have to carry out to stop? You just do it. If you would have to think about the different steps each time, you would hit the car in front or go past the red traffic light. Stopping in front of a red traffic light is a learned behaviour you have done so often it has become automatic. You do it unconsciously.
Many of your responses to the world and other people are of this unconscious type. Some of these responses are good (like stopping at red lights) but others have ceased to be productive and can actually hinder your progress or development. These are the barriers, which we can identify and change. NLP has studied those patterns and the people who are absolute masters at changing those patterns. Out of these studies came a set of tools and techniques that can be used to work with, or change, unwanted patterns.
How does NLP work?
How NLP works depends on where you use it and what you want your end result to be. The basis for every application is rapport. What you do next depends on the situation. If you use NLP in a sales situation, you want to work with your client’s current view on the world. If you use NLP in a teaching situation, you might want to find out more about your student in order for him or her to really progress in his or her study. If you use NLP as a healthcare professional, you could employ some of the techniques to make your clients think, and take responsibility. If you use NLP in a the ‘one day coaching’ session you really want to get to the bottom of the problem, change the things that don’t work for your client, and help your client to create a better world, in which he / she is happy and fulfilled. For a more detailed account of how a ‘one day coaching’ session is structured please contact me by email.
What if I would like to study NLP?
For the people who want to know enough about NLP to get them started and use it in their everyday life, I have created some short home study courses. Each course can be bought and studied on its own. (If there is a course that requires you to study another course first, it will be mentioned clearly.) For the people who really want to know the nitty gritty details of NLP, I do NLP practitioner and NLP master practitioner level courses. When you sign up for my courses, you will also learn about hypnosis and Time Line Therapy. These tree subjects go very well together.
